Abstract: Ethnicity, political manipulation and the quest to have access to the rich mineral resources has
been the main cause of the violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The failure
of political leadership created the circumstance and significant challenges where militia groups
use violence against the population as a means to pursue their parochial agenda. The
assassination of Patrice Lumumba and the installation of the dictatorship government of Joseph
Mobutu open the flood gate political unrest and has since left the country in a circle of wars and
violence from a multitude of foreign and local groups. Successive government since then have
either been overthrow through a military coup d'etat or have been part of a corrupt political
class. |
