Abstract:
Sivaganga became an independent political unit during the time of Vijaya Ragunatha Sethupathi of Ramnad in 1730. Sasivarna Thevar, the son of Periya Udaya Thevar acquired an independent state for his domain. From 1730 A.D. to 1949 in spite of battles and litigation, the rulers of Sivaganga rendered outstanding service towards the welfare of the society in various spheres such as administration, economic, social, educational, religious and cultural.
