Abstract: In this paper, the functioning of a parliamentary government has been analyzed in full detail as the nation is headed for general elections, the 17th general elections within a few months from now. It also looks into the aspect of how far and how effective is it in India, with its multicultural, multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religious, pluralistic political landscape. Generally, a parliamentary form of government works smoothly under a two-party political system like Britain and provides the much needed political stability. However, we have to examine how successful is the system in a multi-party system in terms of providing good governance to the people and the corrective measures that need to be taken, if any. Although the functioning of a parliamentary government can be examined and evaluated from several aspects, the focus in this article is on the stability factor.
