Abstract: Handicraft plays a very important role in representing the culture and traditions of any region.
Handicrafts are a substantial medium to preserve of rich traditional art, heritage and culture,
traditional skills and talents which are associated with people's lifestyle and history. Handicrafts
industry comprises diversified products portfolio and there is large variety available in the
market. In this context wooden mask (mukha) of Kushmandi block, Dakshin Dinajpur is one of
the ancient handicrafts of West Bengal. The wooden mask craft recognized as one of the best
example of elegance, exquisite beauty and finest craftsmanship.IN recent years, this traditional,
decorated handcrafted goods of wooden mask artisans are in immense command in inland and
abroad markets, despite of this the craftsmen are facing lots of problems. So the proposed
research study is an attempt to present a detailed account of wooden mask (mukha) craft in
Kushmandi Block, Dakshin Dinajpur, and also highlight the socio economic conditions of the
craftsmen.In this paper the craft related problem of craftsmen has been addressed and an attempt
regarding solution of problems has been also suggested.
