Abstract: Animal husbandry is an integral component of agriculture, supporting livelihoods of more than
two-thirds of the rural population. It plays a significant role in the rural economy by providing
gainful employment to a large number of small, marginal farmers and landless agricultural
labourers and raising their economic status. Livestock form an important resource for the
landless agricultural labourers as it is the only major asset for them. The present study focused
on the socio economic condition of the mecheri sheep farmers which is an exclusive variety of
mecheri block. The general characteristic of farmers, earning pattern, livestock rearing, land
holding, assets, age cum weight wise market, feed supplement, labour and shearing, marketing
expenditure, hospital, programmers and currently methods are discussed. This study clearly
shows that rearing mecheri sheep is profitable venture to other local breed of mecheri block and
farmers economics condition improving gradually for sheep rearing.
