ABSTRACT:
The present study examined the effect of parenting style on self-esteem of Vietnamese students and the mediating role of personality traits. The results of structural equation model (SEM) analysis based on observations of 614 students show that authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles have an effect on student's self-esteem. In addition, extraversion, neuroticism and openness mediated the relationship between authoritarian style and self-esteem. Research has contributed new information on the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem of Vietnamese students. Therefore, the study is expected to contribute some useful recommendations for policy makers to improve self-esteem in university students.
